How to Choose Cleaning Products Safely for Homes and Workplaces

Choose products by the surface, soil and safety information rather than by fragrance or the strongest claim on the label.

Match the product to the job

A cleaning product should be chosen for the surface, the type of soil and the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Stronger is not automatically better. The wrong product can damage stone, timber, metal, fabric, sealants or painted surfaces.

Before using a new chemical, read the label and test it in an inconspicuous area when appropriate.

Read the label and safety information

For workplace hazardous chemicals, a safety data sheet explains hazards, safe handling, storage, protective equipment and emergency information. Safe Work Australia provides official guidance on safety data sheets.

Keep products in their original labelled containers where possible. If a workplace product is decanted, it needs suitable labelling and should never be placed in food or drink containers.

Use the correct amount

More concentrate can leave residue, create unnecessary fumes and increase the risk of surface damage. Follow the stated dilution and contact time. Use measuring or dispensing systems where required rather than guessing.

Never mix products unless the manufacturer specifically instructs it. Mixing common cleaning chemicals can produce dangerous gases.

Clean before disinfecting

Cleaning removes dirt and organic material. Disinfection is a separate step used where it is needed. Australian Government health guidance explains that surfaces should be cleaned before disinfectant is applied because dirt can reduce its effectiveness. See the official routine cleaning and disinfection guidance.

Not every surface needs routine disinfection. The decision should reflect the setting, risk and product instructions.

Consider people, pets and ventilation

Tell the cleaner about allergies, sensitivities, pets, children and workplace requirements. Ventilation, gloves and other controls should follow the product instructions and the task.

Tas Clean Solutions selects products after considering the surface and agreed service. We do not describe products as harmless, non-toxic or environmentally friendly unless the claim can be supported.
