Start with the key return deadline
The most important date is usually when the property must be ready for inspection or the keys must be returned. Work backwards from that deadline and allow time for cleaning, a final review and any issue that may need attention.
Contacting a cleaner early gives you a better chance of securing the date, especially near the end of a month or during a busy moving period. The actual clean should still happen when the property is ready.
Put the move in the right order
A practical sequence is:
- Finish packing
- Complete repairs and agreed maintenance
- Move furniture and belongings out
- Remove rubbish
- Complete the cleaning
- Photograph and review the property
- Return keys or attend the final inspection
Cleaning before removalists finish can lead to footprints, dust, wall marks and blocked areas. It may also prevent cupboards and floors from being fully accessed.
Allow for the size and condition
A small property in reasonable condition may need less time than a house with several bathrooms, built up kitchen grease, pet hair or extensive glass. Inside appliances, cupboards, screens and tracks also add time when they are included.
Provide current photographs and the relevant condition report or agent checklist so the cleaner can assess the work before the date is locked in.

Keep power and water connected
The cleaner needs suitable lighting, water and electricity for normal equipment and safe work. Do not arrange disconnection before the clean unless the service has confirmed another workable plan.
Leave time for a final review
Where possible, avoid booking the clean to finish at the exact moment the keys are due. A small buffer allows the property to be checked and gives the cleaner or tenant time to discuss anything unexpected.
A cleaner can address items within the agreed scope, but cannot repair damage, control an agent's decision or guarantee a bond outcome.
When to make the enquiry
As soon as the moving and key dates are known, send the property details and request availability. You do not need to wait until the home is empty to ask for a quote. The clean can then be confirmed for the appropriate point after removalists and before handover.
